The freedom of holidays!

Holiday time is wonderful for so many reasons, but one of my favourite benefits is the freedom to think and the time to indulge in those things you’ve wanted to do all year but not got round to. When life’s usual schedule keeps everything running at a frantic pace, the opportunity to stop and think is lost. I am constantly running from place to place, cellphone in one ear, trying to get my preschooler dressed with the other, as I run out the door, late for kindi drop off and an appointment!

When everything comes to a stop, I find time to look after myself and my family with proper conssideration, to connect with friends and to take time out to pamper and nourish myself mentally and physically.

This holiday, the very simple pleasures have been a joy. I have planted a herb garden which is flourishing! So satisfying and so beneficial to help create nourishing meals! Every night our meals are accompanied by delicious fresh herbs full of medicinal benefits. So far I have planted thyme, oregano, mint, parsley and a few others but my favourite this week is basil. It’s packed full of phytonutrients and is often referred to as the ‘king of herbs’. It’s full of vitamin A, Vitamin K, potasssium and more. Basil is also packed full of iron – of which I am deficient according to recent blood tests and has anti oxident properties along with plenty of other health benefits.

The mint has also been a winner. I have been chopping the fresh cut leaves and leaving them to infuse with hot water to create a refreshing after dinner cuppa. Great as a digesstive aid and to clense the palate. Plus mint has anti microbial benefits, is full of vitamin A, vitamin C and beta carotene. Otherwise springs of mint go in the water jug with slices of cucumber for a cool drink with just a subtle mint taste.

I am willing to admit that the health benefits from adding my fresh grown herbs to my evening meal may be real or imagined, however it’s likely to be doing me more good than harm and just the satisfaction of seeing the garden thrive is benefit enough for me!

One of my resolves for 2013 is to continue as I began – to stop and smell the roses – and focus on health, wealth and happiness – but all in the right order.

DIVINE dessert

… served at the Veuve Cliquot degustation dinner at the Wakitipu Grill, Hilton Hotel, Queenstown. This was the final course – a dessert made almost entirely of vegetables – one of the most delicious desserts I’ve had … and all in aid of 5+ a day! 🙂 Chef Peter Thornely outdid himself matching it to a vintage glass of Clicquot….

First up – as my pick of THE event of the winter season is French Champage house – Veuve Clicquot’s annual ‘Clicquot in the Snow’ event which kicks off this week. Clicquot has a reputation for putting on the most exclusive soirees with a true A-list guest list, set against a backdrop of stunning scenery. Sara Tetro, Chris Sisarich and footwear designer Kathryn Wilson are all packing their bags as we speak and will join ski sport royalty when they get there for an undisclosed magicmystery tour, followed by a party at the swanky HIlton hotel where we will all be in residence for our stay. Check out the About Town pages in the Sunday Star Times this week for some snaps from ‘Clicquot in the Snow’ …. and I’ll keep you updated here too! X

Greetings….

After years of avidly updating my twitter posts, being a Facebook regular and writing a weekly column in the Sunday Star Times newspaper, I’ve decided it’s time to put my digital pen to paper in the form of a blog and see what happens…. The blog will follow my musings on the NZ event circuit, best, biggest and most exclusive events happening as well as a few practical tips like what to wear! Plus I’ll try to keep a running commentary on all the super cool health, beauty and lifesstyle bits and pieces that come across my desk. I also can’t help but blog about my passions – including good nutrition, my property renovations, living life at a slower pace to bring about maximum enjoyment and plenty of tips and tricks from a sneaky mummy who loves to apply what I have learnt over the years to be healthier, save money and have fun! Hopefully I’ll be able to provide you all with a little entertainment from time to time…… X
